My Journey

Listening Hand Therapeutic Massage offers massage service and pain relief to Ligonier, Latrobe, Mt Pleasant, Donegal PA and surrounding area.

Just a little bit about my journey so far…

Born In New Zealand – 1975
Some of my earliest childhood memories were with Mum and the piano. That’s me on her lap and my older brother Nic next to us. As I got a little older she would play and I would sing.

Moved to America – 1980
When I was 5, we moved to America for our first time as a family. Dad was developing as a heart surgeon and had some opportunities in the US to grow. We lived in Boston, MA for 2 years and Little Rock, AK for a year. I have many fond memories of exploring parts of this vast country.

Middle Brother of Three
I’ve always joked that my excuse in life is that I am the middle of 3 brothers! The truth be told, I am blessed to have Nic and Andy as brothers. We had a lot of fun in our youth, and they have both grown up to be exceptional men.

Back in NZ – 1984
After 3 years in America, we were back home in New Zealand. I had lots of rich childhood and early teen experiences in such a beautiful country…though, in this image I appear to have accumulated too much baggage.

On Grandpa’s Boat
My maternal grandfather, Grandpa Cate, loved to be on the water. I always enjoyed visiting him and going out on the boat in the gorgeous waters of New Zealand.

Finding My Style
This is one of my favorite photos from childhood. I’ve always liked to have a unique expression. Even at a young age.

Finding Athleticism
During my early years of school, I struggled with basic academics. I often felt poorly about myself because of that. However, around the age of 11, I discovered that I had reasonable athletic abilities. This gave me a much needed boost of confidence and a focus in life.

New Zealand National Champion
As my athletic abilities developed, I found myself a bike racer. By the time I was 15 years old, I had become a regional and national champion in my age range. It was a pretty thrilling time in life.

Kentucky State Champion
In 1992, our family moved back to America. This time to Lexington, KY where Dad received a position at the University of Kentucky Hospital. He did amazing work there helping people. When we arrived, I decided through a series of events to run track instead of ride bikes. In my first year running track, I was the 800 meter state champion and the anchor leg of the 1600 meter relay team which also won state. Another exciting time!

Finding My Creativity
As I got a little older, my interest shifted from athletics to more ethereal pursuits in life: writing poetry and songs, philosophy and spirituality. In the beginning it was pretty raw, but over the years has refined to a passion for leading a life of peace: learning and helping others.

Playing In The Band
One of my great joys in life was playing in a band. The last band I played with, Between the Tide out of Louisville KY, was a dream come true. The other band members were fun and creative. We all worked so well together in writing songs and laughed uncontrollably every time we met. It was a great experience that I will always cherish.

Sharing What I’ve Learned
Another big part of my journey has been teaching. Here I am doing a workshop about the benefits of, and how to make fermented foods. Before becoming a massage therapist, I was a middle school teacher in Los Angeles for a few years, and then in Louisville. I have also taught massage therapy at the Lexington Healing Arts Academy, from which I graduated. I will continue to share what I’ve learned so far.

Homesteading
As I have grown and changed over the years, I have come to have a love for a homesteading life-style. Katie and I like to know where our food comes from, and enjoy the relationship with the plant, animals, and soil. It deeply enriches our lives.

Blessed To Be With This Beautiful Woman
This is my favorite photo of Katie and me. It’s actually from my first visit to meet her family in PA. I am extremely grateful to have found a partner in life who astounds me with her inner and outer beauty. I know I must have done something right to get to be with her!
